Before placing the blade in the machine if you turn it horizontally you can see which side is sharpened. This side should inserted so that the potato is pressed against the sharp side. If you cannot see which side to insert - place the machine so you are looking down over it with the handle closest to you and the blade end away from you. Insert the blade from the right hand side, making sure there are two grooves on the top side of the blade and one groove on the bottom side.
